Last minute Fathers Day Ideas? Homemade Horopito BBQ Sauce

Dean Fountain
If the kids make it - this is "The Best Homemade BBQ Sauce Ever!"

This will take less than an hour, its pretty easy and the kids can be involved all the way to the end to the washing of spoons and cups!  Literally chuck all the ingredients into a pan (the kids will love the excitement of making a concoction and a mess - then the adult can watch over the kids and let the sauce simmer for 45 mins.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

This is a sweet and spicy bbq sauce! If you want to increase the spice and less sweet just reduce the sugar and increase the horopito or cayenne.

  • 2 cups tomato sauce - The cheap stuff is fine
  • 1 cup water - boil it first and let it cool
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 8 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon of horopito ground pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne

Fathers Gift Ideas

  1. Add all ingredients to a medium sized saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat to simmer and allow to simmer for 45 minutes-1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  3. Remove from heat, allow to cool before storing it in the fridge!

The hard bit.... find a nice glass vessel - old jam jar, recycled bottle of ketchup etc. an original and well thought of last minute Fathers Day gift!
